CLASS OF 1969 - 40TH REUNION CELEBRATION

Saturday, May 23, 2009

The Phillips High School "Mighty Bulldogs" of 1969 held their 40th reunion luncheon at the Comfort Inn banquet room on Western Blvd in Tarboro, North Carolina from 11: 00 am- 3:00 pm on Saturday May, 23, 2009.  The class enjoyed a wonderful lunch catered by Abrams Barbecue of Tarboro. Their menu included barbecue, baked and fried chicken, green beans, potatoes, coleslaw, hush puppies and a special reunion cake.   As they shared memories, food, fellowship, presentations, door prizes, entertainment, recognitions and a special memorial to their 16 deceased classmates, they were transformed back to 18 year-olds for just a moment.   The reality of having lost 16 members of their class over the years was a reminder of the importance of having a reunion.
Mrs. Nellie Hunter, the class advisor, honored the group with her presence and reflections on their years as her students and the pride she felt in them now as adults and in all they have accomplished.  She expressed her wishes for their continued joy, happiness and blessings of God for their futures.
Lannie Hill, who served for a while as MC, delighted us with a taste of his old 1969 humor, playfulness and laughter. He was exceptional!  It was a time enjoyed by us all.  Among the hugs, smiles, catching up and tremendous joy of seeing one another, the members generously collected a donation of $2,000 to be presented to Mr. Etheridge and the Phillips Middle School library.  One member, who asked to remain anonymous, donated $1,000 of this total. This generous donation will help the school and all its children, at a time of severe budget cuts, to purchase books and materials for the school library.     Each attendee was presented with a commemorative reunion t-shirt, a bookmark, pen, and a souvenir book to remind them of this special event and reflect back on their graduation in 1969.
The Class of 1969 planned their celebration around the PBAA annual school reunion and many members attended the Phillips/Bricks Alumni Association Friday night meet and greet and Saturday night banquet and dance.  On Friday we joined our fellow alumni in a wonderful meal and a tour of the newly renovated main building, library and spent a few minutes in the old gym.   The Saturday night banquet allowed us to sit together and to announce our donation to Phillips Middle as a group. A group picture was taken of those who attended.
The class worshiped at Salem Chapel Baptist Church on Sunday and hosted a celebration lunch after church in the fellowship hall.  In the spirit giving, service and the joint celebration of Phillips High School, all other Phillips alumni and attendees were invited to our Sunday lunch.
It was a wonderful reunion weekend and an event that will be remembered fondly by all of those who attended.   - BPA
