The Teacherage adjoining Phillips School was constructed in the early 1950s, shortly after the construction of Phillips School in 1949. The building was first owned by School Principal Carlos M. Carraway and his wife, Maggie Highsmith Carraway. They lived downstairs and rented the upstairs rooms to teachers working at Phillips School. He later sold the property to Elizabeth Thorpe Harris James, and she maintained the same arrangement, renting rooms to teachers at the school. On her death, her husband John James, sold the property to Richard and Nellie Hill Avent, and she currently uses both floors for her private residence.
