Phillips and Bricks  - An Important History and Legacy

Phillips High School graduated classes from 1950 to 1972 as one of the four  high schools for African Americans in Edgecombe County.   This spanned a period of 23 years and 23 graduating classes.  Its predecessor, Bricks School, was at one time the only high school for African Americans who lived in the county limits  until it was destroyed by a fire.  Those students who lived in the city limits of Tarboro and Rocky Mount could attend W. A. Pattillo or Booker T. Washington High Schools.  After the fire at Bricks students that attended Bricks moved to area churhes until Phllips was ready in 1949 graduating  the first class in 1950.   Shortly after PHS was changed to a middle school in 1972, following desegregation, dedicated alumni members came together and organized an annual celebration of its important history and legacy. This celebration has continued for 33 years.
